Methane Pollution Has Cheap, Effective Solutions That Aren’t Being Used

Methane pollution is a significant contributor to climate change, with a global warming potential 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Despite this, there are cost-effective solutions available to reduce methane emissions that are not being utilized.

One such solution is the capture and use of methane gas from landfills and wastewater treatment plants. Methane can be captured and used as a renewable energy source, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing a reliable energy supply.

Another effective strategy is the implementation of leak detection and repair programs in the oil and gas industry. By identifying and fixing methane leaks in pipelines and infrastructure, significant reductions in methane emissions can be achieved at relatively low cost.

Additionally, livestock management practices can be improved to reduce methane emissions from enteric fermentation in ruminant animals. This can be achieved through dietary supplements, feed additives, and better manure management techniques.

Despite the availability of these cheap and effective solutions, many industries and governments have been slow to implement them. Greater awareness and political will are needed to drive the adoption of these strategies and significantly reduce methane pollution.
