Space Elevators Could Totally Work—If Earth Days Were Much Shorter

Space elevators have long been considered a potential solution for getting humans and cargo into space more efficiently and cost-effectively. This futuristic concept involves a large tether stretching from the Earth’s surface into space, allowing vehicles to climb up and down without the need for costly rockets.

However, one major obstacle to the practicality of space elevators is the length of an Earth day. With our current 24-hour day-night cycle, a space elevator would have to endure extreme stresses and strains as it orbits around the Earth’s axis.

If Earth days were much shorter, say only a few hours long, the challenges of building and maintaining a space elevator would be greatly reduced. The shorter day would result in less stress on the tether, making it much more feasible to construct and operate such a system.

Of course, changing the length of Earth days is far from a simple task. It would require a fundamental shift in the Earth’s rotation, which is not something that can be easily accomplished.
